The five universal requirements for a good job

Gemini Consulting has conducted one of the first in-depth, international studies of workers in industrialised nations. After studying 10,000 workers from 13 industrialised nations, including Japan, Russia and the USA, as well as several countries in Western Europe, the same five key factors for a good job have been identified, regardless of cultural and economic differences:

  1. Balance between work and family/leisure time
  2. Work that is really interesting
  3. Security for the future
  4. Good wages
  5. Interesting and considerate fellow workers.

Potential advancement and the opportunity to build up a personal skills base were also emphasised. Employers who re-evaluate the traditional view of the workplace, especially in terms of time, opportunities and incentives, and who establish a genuine two-way contract with the employee will have the best opportunities to achieve success, both today and in the future.
