Recruiting Employees from India: Things to Keep in Mind

When you’re recruiting internationally, you have to take the potential employee’s country and culture into consideration. As the “Godfather” suggests, you have to make them an offer they can’t refuse!

But in order to do this, you have to understand where they’re coming from. Different people want different things. For some, health insurance might be an absolute necessity. For others, it’s the working conditions that make all the difference.

Now, when you’re hiring a candidate from India, you’ll need to understand what they’re looking for. Many IT companies try to attract people from this part of the world. Here are certain things that they could benefit from knowing:

Family

If you’re Indian, your family is one of the most important things in the world for you. And this refers to your nuclear unit, which includes your spouse and kids. But it can also include your siblings, parents, aunts, uncles etc.

When you’re trying to attract someone Indian to your company, you’re asking them to be away from large sections of their extended family which is something they may or may not want to do. What would help is if you can show them that there will be a place for their immediate family in the place they are relocating to.

This might mean reassuring them that their spouse will be able to get a visa which is the number one thing of importance to anyone thinking about going abroad from India. Plus, you might also want to show them that there are good schools for their children, that the neighborhoods they will be considering are safe, good places for family life and raising children and even that there is a community of Indians/South Asians in your city, neighborhood or company.

Stability

Another thing that’s really important to Indians is stability. They want to hear that they’re getting a good salary, sure. But more than money, they’re looking for stability. They want to settle down somewhere and stay there at least for a period of years if not for the rest of their lives.

So you need to show them that there is long-term potential in your company. You can do this by introducing them to people who have worked at your company for many years. You can also reassure them about the safety and stability of your neighborhoods.

What are the other things a person needs for stability? You can show them that there is potential for growth in your company. Good benefits and good working conditions also add to stability.

Weather

Most people from India are going to gravitate towards warm weather. So if you can show them they’ll be relocating to a warm place, you have an advantage. There’s a reason why many IT people from India are found in California: it’s because they like the sun.

Community

A sense of community also matters a lot to people from the South Asian subcontinent. If they can’t be around their immediate family, which includes all their aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, nephews, nieces etc., they would at least like to be close to other people from their part of the world. They want to be able to eat Indian food, watch Bollywood movies, celebrate Indian festivals and go to a temple (or a mosque, depending on their religion).

So if you can show them that there’s a flourishing Indian community in your city or neighborhood, then they’ll definitely want to move there. Even if the Indian or South Asian community is not very large, it will help them to know that there are some people around who will be able to relate to them and help them to fit in.
