Employment Trends and Society’s Dependency on Technology

It’s no surprise that technology plays a large role not just in the business world, but in our daily lives as well. Many of us have become completely obsessed with our technology, and can’t seem to live without it. Whether we’re texting our friends at all times of the day, or are using social media to personify ourselves, technology has become an extension of who we already are. After all, many people personify themselves through social networking, and their social media personality is much different from how they are in real life.

Our dependency on technology obviously extends to the business world as well, especially when it comes to employment trends. Quite often, we let our devices do all the work for us, and are a lot more technological when it comes to looking for employees. Many years ago, all interviews were in person. Nowadays, however, not only are numerous businesses strictly internet based, but interviews are done online as well. In a way, this severs the human connection you can develop with your potential candidates, and vice versa. Speaking of which, have we as a society become too reliant on our tech? What’s the best way to remedy this? Overall, here are a few things to consider.

Our Reliance on Technology

In many ways, we’ve definitely become too reliant on technology. As mentioned in my previous examples, they’ve become an extension of who we are, and without it, we should die on the inside, figuratively speaking. As an example, let’s say someone spent their heart and soul creating a personal online blog or portfolio for a job offer. However, through an unexpected website error, all that information was lost. In today’s age especially, an online persona (whether it’s a portfolio or a Facebook page) is more than just words on a page, it’s a part of us.

Technology is For the Better

However, is our reliance on technology and social media all bad? As a matter of fact, it’s not. After all, how else would we be as successful as we are if it wasn’t for certain technological advancements? How else would employees be able to apply for jobs easier if it wasn’t for social media? With the use of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), for example, it’s much easier to keep in touch with customers and potential employees. If a potential candidate wants to contact you regarding a job offer, you’re no longer restricted to the phone in your office. It’s definitely become more of a recent trend for candidates and hiring managers to keep in touch during the hiring process. As another example of technology improving our lives, it’s much less of a hassle when writing papers. Remember the tediousness of using a typewriter? Overall, our dependency on technology isn’t as one-sided as it may seem. While there are plenty of ways we could improve, they’ve also brought a lot of great changes and advancements, especially in terms of employment trends. In fact, would these trends even exist without technological advancements?

How Can We Improve?

Now that it’s been established our reliance on technology isn’t all bad, what are some ways we can improve? After all, while our tech does help us both in and outside of the workplace, there are ways we can use it effectively without becoming obsessed. As an example, if you use Facebook often, why not take a break from it and interact with your friends in person? If you’re looking to solve some equations, use your head instead of relying on Google to solve the problem for you. Going back to what I said about social media, what if it’s a major outlet for your business? It’s not like you can just walk away from it, right? Instead of focusing on the usual conversations with your “friends”, look at Twitter and Facebook as your own personal business instead. Use it as an outlet for engaging and drawing in customers with unique content.
